IMF sees the US keeping the G7's widest budget deficit through 2028

The IMF's April 2026 figures put the US general government deficit (federal, state and local, not the federal deficit CBO reports) at 7.9% of GDP in 2024, the G7's widest. The IMF's 2025 figure and 2026-28 forecasts keep the US widest, at 7.6% in 2028.
