Which mutual funds accept NRIs living in the US and Canada?
Some fund houses accept NRIs who live in the US or Canada, with conditions, and some do not. Each fund house sets its own policy and may change it, so confirm with the fund house before investing. MF Utilities India (MFU) keeps a list on its page for residents of the USA and Canada. As shown on 12 October 2026, the list has 52 fund houses: 23 say No and 29 say Yes or Yes/No. Eleven of those 29 accept residents of the USA but not residents of Canada.
Where the answer is Yes, there are conditions. MFU’s page tells a resident of the USA or Canada to make sure of uploading a duly filled and signed USA/Canada declaration, in the format the respective fund house requires, within three days of placing the order. The page adds that the fund house reserves the right to accept or reject the transaction, subject to the evidence being available within that time.

US tax reporting (FATCA)
MFU’s list does not give a reason for any fund house’s policy. For background, the US Internal Revenue Service says the US law called FATCA “generally requires that foreign financial Institutions and certain other non-financial foreign entities report on the foreign assets held by their U.S. account holders or be subject to withholding on withholdable payments.” The US Treasury lists an agreement with India on FATCA as in force since 31 August 2015.
Steps for an NRI living in the US or Canada
- Find the fund house in MFU’s table. If it says No, MFU shows that it does not accept residents of the USA or Canada.
- If it says Yes or Yes/No, read its note on MFU’s page. Notes cover points such as US residents only, lump sum only, being present in India, and online use only through the fund house’s own website.
- Submit the USA/Canada declaration. MFU’s page says to upload a duly filled and signed declaration, in the format the respective fund house requires, within three days of placing the order. The fund house reserves the right to accept or reject the transaction, subject to the evidence being available within that time.
- Confirm the fund house’s policy with the fund house before you invest. Each one can change it.
